Flight 404 screenshotMike in Y!Haus showed me this sweet blog, Flight 404, where the author describes how he generates audio visualizations. I highly recommend checking out the video in the April 21st post. I could watch it for hours (and the audio rocks too!).

Laptop PouchWith a massive amount of head-banging, hem-haws, and angst-ridden hissyfits, I have decided upon my new laptop pouch. Mind you, this is only for my work laptop, and while it’s already acid-washed from use, I’m quite impressed with its workhorse attitude. I figure it deserves some coddling. I purchased the pouch from a site called “Barry’s Farm”, which peddles handmade unique products. It’s a small scale outfit, and I echatted directly with the maker when I had some questions. She was extremely nice and fun; I like them, so I am spreading the word. :-)

My sister, Elaine, just launched her blog: littlemisscocoa. It’s a very cute and hilarious accounts of her chocolate adventures. Suddenly, my blog seems extremely boring and nonsensical (well, more so than before).

So “Wii Mondays” are now “Wii Wednesdays”, on the second Wednesday of every month. Hope you can join us!

xkcd.com rocks!

Bill Gates’ commencement speech at Harvard is surprisingly funny and inspirational. I especially like his quote, “I’m just happy that the Crimson has called me ‘Harvard’s most successful dropout.’ I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class … I did the best of everyone who failed.” With this speech and his work at the Melinda and Bill Gates’ Foundation, I admit I’m reconsidering my original impression of him. The guy’s done a lot of amazing things, not the least of which was getting an entire crazy industry to consolidate to some sort of a standard (by a monopoly, but who’s counting?).

And what’s with Harvard getting great speeches (Conan O’Brian, Ali G) at their graduation? I got a stodgy World Bank president at my graduation, and the only excitement there (besides everyone getting hypothermia from sitting in the rain) was a group of 5 protesters for every 40 policemen on horseback.

routers

June 8, 2007

Initially, I thought the interface was too clunky, but I keep going back- the routing algorithm is too effective to ignore. Check out HopStop for finding time-evaluated public transportation routes. I used it for my to- and fro- commutes in San Francisco, and I was amazed that my own 3-month-long trial-and-error field research agreed with their suggestion. In short, I take different buses in the am and pm because of where the stop locations are on these one-way streets, and I also vary depending on the hour I leave work. They totally got that.

oui, wii whee!

May 22, 2007

We’re having Wii Mondays here at Brickhouse, the Yahoo! innovation outpost in San Francisco at which I work. The first one is June 18th- please drop by! Here’s the Upcoming page.

Redfin is a great example of a mashup with a monetizable business model. I can’t imagine an easier way to shop for real estate and save money, nor a better way to solidify my resignation of staying in the renters market a bit longer.

what we do

This Mercury News video interview of my group’s VP, Bradley Horowitz, was filmed at our open house a couple weeks ago. It’s a bit long, but it nicely covers what my group does at Yahoo!.
